November 18, 2016: STF’s newest chapter at The Archer School for Girls celebrated Universal Day of the Child by asking students to sign the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) petition to President-elect Trump requesting he send the CRC to the Senate for review in his first 100 days in office.

Members set up a table in the campus courtyard and exchanged signatures for an “I Signed” sticker and a baked good with a flag listing different children rights violations. More than 250 6th-12th graders were eager to sign the petition and show their support for children’s rights!

November 18, 2016: Santa Monica HS STF Chapter visited seven freshmen seminar classes to educate students about their rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). They presented the Convention’s main points and invited students to sign our CRC petition. This resulted not only in signatures but also new chapter members who are interested in furthering their knowledge of human rights through STF!

November 30, 2016: Sierra Canyon STF (FREE Club) and Black Student Union (BSU) chapters worked together to share the testimonies of formerly incarcerated youth with more than 500 7th-12th graders in celebration of California Proposition 57 passing. Presenters connected the importance of Prop 57 to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), citing the fact that one of the reasons the U.S. has not ratified the CRC is because of the way we treat juveniles in our criminal justice system. Supportive audience members signed the CRC petition during lunch, adding more than 120 signatures to our growing collection.

December 7, 2016: STF members at Valencia High hosted a tabling event to educate their peers about the Convention on the Rights of the Child by outlining the petition addressed to the President-elect. Many students were surprised to find out that the U.S. had never ratified the CRC, and were inquisitive to learn what constitutes a “child’s right.”

STFers decorated the table with baked goods, balloons, and vibrant signage to encourage students to stop by.

December 8, 2016: The Carson STF chapter dedicated their lunch to collecting CRC petitions signatures, by small groups reaching out to fellow students on campus. STFers walked around the main quad area and discussed why the U.S. needs to ratify the CRC, while gathering signatures. They feel this type of educational advocacy helps them reach more people on campus.

December 9, 2016: Canyon High’s STF chapter collaborated with Ecos Chicos, Yes I Can, Leadership, Special Olympics and GSA clubs to produce this Human Rights Day video to raise awareness about what are human rights and the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10. Enjoy!
