Climate Summit Day – April 22, 2022 Palisades Charter High School

Welcome to Pali’s Climate Summit Day resource page for teachers!

Pali’s first ever Climate Summit Day takes place Friday, April 22nd – Earth Day. This special activity schedule will extend Period 4, giving time for all Pali teachers to offer a 40 minute climate-focused lesson (or extend their existing climate-focused lesson by 40 minutes).

To support teacher’s efforts, the Human Rights Watch Student Task Force (STF) is providing a library of resources across content areas to link teachers with climate-focused curriculum in their disciplines. We have provided lesson plans and materials to explore, as well as a ready-to-go lesson (complete with discussion questions, materials, and PowerPoint presentations) for those new to embedding climate in their subject area or who will have a student presenter.

Ready-to-go lesson

I’m no climate expert and I’d like a pre-packaged lesson with everything included that a student leader or I will deliver.

Why a Climate Summit Day?

Palisades Charter HS teachers and administrators have worked with the STF Team to conduct several human rights education professional development days over the years. We are pleased to support Pali’s Climate Summit Day as part of the Pali STF chapter’s work in our Human Rights and the Climate Crisis Campaign.

Many students identify the climate crisis as the defining issue of our time, and since fall 2019, STF members at Pali have been advocating for 100% clean, renewable energy. Pali STFers participated in LAUSD’s adoption of the 100% Clean Energy Resolution on December 3, 2019, which inspired numerous on-campus education efforts to raise awareness of the need for renewable energy. They also presented the first student-authored and led climate resolution to the Pali Board of Trustees, which passed unanimously on May 18, 2021. The resolution created the Pali Clean Energy Task Force, operating in three sub-committees focused on transitioning to 100% renewable energy, energy efficiency, and climate education.

Pali has a Board vetted and approved solar energy proposal currently waiting in LAUSD’s system while other projects are prioritized. The Climate Education Sub-Committee developed this April 22 (Earth Day) Climate Summit Day to ensure the Pali community is aware and educated about these efforts to transition Pali to 100% renewable energy. It is vital that the entire Palisades Charter High School community is empowered with the knowledge to continue advocating for solar. Our home planet cannot wait for a convenient time. We must act now, as a unified school, to radically reduce our carbon footprint and become a beacon of hope for the Palisades community and beyond.

Lesson Plans By Subject

Below is a sampling of lesson plans by subject though not exhaustive. Note that these resources are geared toward teachers outside of science where resources for climate change are often more difficult to find. Visit the additional curricular resources below if you do not find something that suits your subject or the topic you’d like to cover. Be sure to check out other subjects as many of the lesson plans are applicable for multiple areas! Click on the subject title to see lesson plans.

Ready-to-Go Lessons

Each topic in the boxes below has four activities created by the STF team. These activities are about 15 minutes each and can be facilitated by a student or a teacher. They provide options for the facilitator to choose what to focus on for the Take Action element. These activities are ready to go in slideshow format but need instructions to be deleted by the facilitator once they choose the Take Action. If you have questions or comments about these resources please contact Jordan Todd.
